TEACHING PRACTICE and RESEARCH

Caroline D’Haese has been for 15 years on the board of the teaching staff at The Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp at the Dance Department – De Singel developing and teaching the courses for improvisation, composition, choreography, nutrition, entrepreneurship, Artist in Society and as a mentor. She was a regular  jurymember teaching at the auditions for the bachelor Dance and being part of the student evaluation and feedback team on the bachelor course. She had the honour to be invited to be part the designing the vision and program for the Master in Dance at that institute. This was accredited in 2018 and started as the first Flemish Master in Dance and in place since 2019. She was also the one introducing the DAS ARTS feedback system in the creative subjects at RCA. She was 26 when she started teaching at this institute and till 2 years ago she kept refining her teaching methodologies and re-shaping the content of the courses  together with her colleagues in discours with her own artistic parcours and the tendencies within the Flemish and international performance art fields.

In the last 5 years she embarked into research at the Royal Conservatoire within the CORPoREAL research group together with Natalie Gordon.
The research focused on dance vocabulary in contemporary dance (education) and resulted in a publication for FORUM+ (autumn 2019) ‘Gaps and Goals in Contemporary Dance Education’ This article gives an insight on their work and on the dansstaalkaarten that came out of it: tool for designing dance curriculum in (part-time) dance education systems. This is now disseminated in the book DANCE (Ch)ARTS.. She is also the co-promotor for the current research project of Tuur Marinus on Friction in Choreographic Processes.

In 2019 she decided to give her artistic practice and research again more priority and take a step back from teaching at this institute. This has given her the opportunity to re-ingnite her own work and signature and again perform in others people work as well.

She has a pedagogical teaching certification and graduated with the same cum laude as a Nutrition, Health and Lifestyle Consultant at the European Academy with the dissertation on Nutrition for dance: artists or topsporters?.

Her vision on teaching is developed by teaching mainly improvisation and composition in different performance contexts. This trajectory started at the artistic department of the Academie voor Podiumkunsten Aalst, afdeling Herzele, where she taught for 6 years to 6 year-olds to 18 year olds when she just graduated at 22. She was inspired by the idea that abstract art was possible for 8 year olds for sure and encouraged them on artistic explorations and feedback development from that early age onwards.. There she was picked up to become a core staff member of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in 2005.
She also advised DKO on their curriculum for Artistic Training and has regularly given mastering classes for teachers or institutions (Tanzhaus NRW, Dusseldorf, Platform K…). She has also been invited as a guestteacher (kunsthumaniora’s Gent en Antwerpen, Danspunt, mus-e, Kunstkuur, Wisper, De Ingang,...)
She gives workshops for teachers to teach dance inclusively (f.e. along with Platform K at Tanzhaus Dusseldorf.)
Recently she was supporting the Academy of Anderlecht with helping the dance department get in line with the current governmental guidelines.

In 2022 she became a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher under the supervision of Eva Kamala Rodenburgh and is a regular teacher ever since.
Becoming a Contakids Kids certified teacher in 2017 she is offering Contakids to organisations as playfull and skillfull movement workshops for toddlers and their caretakers.

In 2019 she set up P L A Y G R O U N D S together with colleagues from the arts (Michel Yang+, Staf Vos, Io Cooman). It is a space for artists wanting to work in rural environments. The vision behind this workspace is based on (artistic) exchange. In the future they aim to connect and re-inforce (local) communities through dance.

She is an active performance and visual arts audience. She recently published in Rekto-Verso via Dance & Dare, a writing laboratory on dance.  Next to performing arts work she regularly see work at f.e. Watou, The Bienale in Venice, Ghuislain Museum and

She hopes to continue doing research in and for the arts, as well as to continue to share her experiential knowledge via arts education and performances and in non-artistic environments.

She has a profound interest in education, nature, genderstudies, anthropology and visual arts which influences her work as an artist as well as a human, a mother, an activist, ecologist and positive feminist.
